After nearly a year in quarantine, the COVID-19 pandemic has just made the economic inequalities in our community greater and some folks here in West Chester are really struggling.

People have lost loved ones, jobs, their savings, and even their homes. Depression and anxiety are on the rise. Rent, mortgages, and bills are late.  A recent Pennsylvania Licensed Beverage and Tavern Association survey found that 70 percent of neighborhood restaurants and bars may not survive the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I am now convinced that the simplest approach will prove to be the most effective — the solution to poverty is to abolish it directly by a now widely discussed measure: the guaranteed income.”

-Rev. Dr. Martin Luther king, Jr.

Guarantee Basic Income is Needed Now More Than Ever

Last year, Andrew Yang planted the idea of Guaranteed Basic Income. Last June, the Mayors for a Guaranteed Income – a network of Mayors advocating for a guaranteed income—direct, recurring cash payments—that lifts all of our communities, building a resilient, just America.

From their website, “Cities are the laboratories of democracy, and mayors are closest to the communities they serve. Mayors see the real, everyday effects of economic insecurity and are the best equipped to advocate for their residents.”

As someone whose life was transformed by an infusion of cash, I know what the effects of just giving people money can be. Not only does it help pay the bills and provide financial stability, but it gives you confidence and makes you feel like you have control over your own destiny.

I want to invest in my neighbors and help them get through these tough times, so please join me in calling for Mayor Herrin to sign this letter as one of her final acts as Mayor and to use her unique position to take the fight for folks struggling due to the pandemic to Harrisburg and craft legislation to put money directly into people’s hands.
